Thomas joins shackles protest

Mark Thomas has joined a protest at a British firm said to be providing shackles used at Guantanamo Bay.

The comic spent the day with campaigners in orange jumpsuits who staged their protest outside the headquarters of Hiatts in Birmingham.

They came from the anti-death penalty human rights group Reprieve, which believes inmates are mistreated at the US camp on Cuba.

Hiatts, which has been making handcuffs since 1780, refuse to comment on the claims.

One of the protestors, Birmingham doctor David Nicholl, told BBC News: ‘We felt we had to deliver a message [they] couldn't ignore.’

Two years ago, Californian police returned 1,000 pairs of handcuffs to Hiatts after a prisoner suffered cut wrists while being restrained in them.
