Brett Goldstein is to make a ​romantic comedy series about a divorced dad who accidentally becomes a male escort.

Amazon’s Prime Video has picked up eight episodes of the  half-hour single-camera show Escorted,  which is set in New York and described as being about ‘sexual dynamics, keeping secrets, and whether real intimacy can ever be bought’.

Goldstein said: ‘I’m so excited to bring a wholesome show about condoms, co-parenting, and cosplay to Amazon – the place where I actually buy my condoms, so it feels like a real full circle moment.’

He will be showrunner on the series with Brian Gallivan, who previously worked with Goldstein as executive producers on Apple TV’s Shrinking.

‘We’re excited to see him reteam with the incredibly talented Brian Gallivan—a comedy force in his own right—on this exciting new series.

Peter Friedlander, head of global TV at Amazon MGM Studios, added: ‘What makes Escorted so compelling is that beneath all of the chaos, comedy, and secrecy is an unexpectedly tender story about people searching for connection.

‘Brett Goldstein and Brian Gallivan have crafted a series that feels daring, emotionally authentic, and entirely original.’

Casting for the series has not yet been announced.

Since finding international fame via Ted Lasso, Goldstein also co-created and co-wrote the six-part science fiction anthology series Soulmates for AMC and the romcom Office Romance, in which he stars alongside Jennifer Lopez, which lands on Netflix on June 5. His stand-up special The Second Best Night of Your Life was released on Apple TV last year.

• Prime Video has also ordered a third season of its long-form prank show Jury Duty, in which an unsuspecting member of the public is plunged into a situation where every other participant is an actor. Season one was set at a trial, and season two at  a corporate retreat.
