Doon and out: Mackichan quits Two Doors Down

As BBC confirm sitcom will return for a sixth series

Doon Mackichan has left the cast of Two Doors Down, Chortle can reveal.

The BBC today announced that the sitcom will be back for a sixth series and a Christmas special, with filming now under way in Glasgow.

However, Mackichan’s character Cathy has been written out after the former Smack The Pony star decided to move on. In the new episodes, Cathy is revealed to have left her husband Colin (Jonathan Watson).

Producers at BBC Studios Comedy said: ’It has been absolutely fantastic to have Doon in the show. She’ll always be part of the Two Doors Down family and we wish her all the best. ‘

‘Her character Cathy has been a great source of horror, entertainment and laughs for millions of viewers over the years. We await news of what will become of poor Colin. What will he do with all the empties? And who’ll microwave his dinner for him?’

The rest of the ensemble cast are returning to Latimer Crescent, with Arabella Weir and Alex Norton playing Beth and Eric, whose peaceful suburban existence is continually punctured by the inappropriate behaviour of their neighbours and family including hypochondriac Christine (Elaine C Smith),  ever-positive Michelle (Joy McAvoy), hapless Alan (Graeme Stevely), loving son Ian (Jamie Quinn) and his wide-eyed fiancé Gordon (Kieran Hodgson).

Siobhan Redmond will also be joining the cast as a new series regular, although her role has not yet been revealed.

Steven Canny, executive producer for BBC Studios Comedy said: ’It’s such a pleasure and privilege to be back making Two Doors Down.

‘It’s a phenomenal crew, a brilliantly funny cast and the beautifully crafted scripts are a constant source of surprise and delight sprinkled with cruelty. I’m really looking forward to the audience seeing the new ways we’ve found to torment poor Beth and Eric."

And commissioning editor Seb Barwell, said the show ‘continues to delight audiences with its miniature masterpieces of contained comedy’

The episodes will air on BBC Two and iPlayer later this year and are being filmed on location and at BBC Scotland’s Dumbarton Studios. The first five series are available on BBC iPlayer
