US remake of Friday Night Dinner confirmed

It'll be called Dinner With The Parents  and air on Amazon Freevee

The American remake of Friday Night Dinner is to be called Dinner With The Parents  and air on Amazon’s Freevee platform, it has been revealed.

In October, Chortle reported  that a ten-episode series based on Robert Popper’s original Channel 4 scripts had been commissioned, but at the time no broadcaster was attached.

Although set in the US, the remake will be filmed in the UK, as it is cheaper to film here.

American actors will be cast to play the twentysomething brothers and their embarrassing parents – but none have been announced yet.

Former David Letterman writer Jon Beckerman will be penning the new scripts and acting as showrunner and will be one of the executive producers. The others are Popper, original producer Caroline Leddy Kenton Allen and Matthew Justice from programme-makers Big Talk and Tristram Shapeero, who will be directing.

The logline for Dinner With The Parents reads: ‘In this half-hour single camera comedy, two brothers in their 20s who go to their mom and dad’s for dinner each week, somehow get through it without actually, physically, dying of embarrassment. If your 54-year-old dad has ever "dabbed" while shirtless in front of your girlfriend, or your mom won’t stop bringing up that time when you had to be rushed to the pediatrician after an incident with a shampoo bottle, which is why your brother still calls you "Pert Plus," you will relate to this show. If not, must be nice!’

Americans have had several attempts at making thier own version of Friday Night Dinner. A 2011 remake that got as far as being shot for NBC with Mom’s Allison Janney and Monk’s Tony Shalhoub in the parental roles, while rivals CBS tried again in 2014 and 2016.

‘Every year, they sort of attempt it, and then it doesn’t happen, and someone else attempts it,’ Popper told the Radio Times in 2020.

The British series, which ran for six seasons from 2011 to 2020 starred Simon Bird, Tom Rosenthal, Tamsin Greig, Mark Heap and the late Paul Ritter.

Dinner With The Parents is a co-production between Big Talk and CBS Studios
