New cast announced for BBC's dark comedy

Reece Shearsmith, Tim Key and Rufus Jones have all joined the cast of BBC’s dark comedy thriller Stag.

Filming starts on the three-part series, set over an horrific stag weekend, in Scotland today.

The main leads are played by Horrible Histories star Jim Harwick and Stephen Campbell Moore, who most recently played Reverend Aaron Webb in Our Zoo.

They play a meek school teacher and his future brother-in-law respectively who go on a deer-stalking expedition in the Scottish Highlands. But they come to realise they themselves are the prey, and ‘sordid secrets begin to emerge and old friendships are tested to the limit in a ruthless battle for survival’, according to the BBC blurb.

Stag has been written by George Kay, who previously penned episodes of The Hour, and Jim Field Smith, who directed and produced The Wrong Mans. He takes the same roles on this BBC Two show.

Also announced as joining the cast today are JJ Feild, who played Marsac in BBC One’s The Musketeers; James Cosmo who played Jeor Mormont in Game of Thrones; Sharon Rooney; who played Rae in My Mad Fat Diary; and Amit Shah, who played ‘the BBC’s most culturally inclusive weather forecaster’ in W1A

Field Smith said: ‘I can’t believe this fantastic roster of talent is joining us for seven weeks of hell in the Highlands, and can only assume they haven’t read the scripts properly.’

Myfanwy Moore, controller of UK comedy production at the BBC, and executive producer of Stag, said: ‘Jim and George have created a rip-roaring comedy thriller - and we’re delighted that such a fabulous cast have agreed to join in on what will no doubt be a terrifyingly funny ride.’
