It's no wind-up

Fonejacker is Bafta's best comedy

Fonejacker – Channel 4’s prank phone call show – has been named the best comedy on TV by Bafta judges.

Kayvan Novak’s wind-ups, set to crude animations, beat The Armstrong & Miller Show, Benidorm, Russell Brand’s Ponderland and Star Stories to win the coveted award at tonight’s ceremony.

Meanwhile Harry Hill and Gavin and Stacey both scooped two Baftas.

Harry Hill's TV Burp was named best entertainment programme, while the comic himself won for best entertainment performance.

Gavin and Stacey won the audience award, the only category voted for by viewers, beating higher-rated shows such as The Apprentice, Strictly Come Dancing and Britain’s Got Talent.

Its star James Corden took the prize for best comedy performance, ahead of Stephen Merchant for Extras and David Mitchell for Peep Show.

Peep Show was crowned best sitcom, ahead of Benidorm, The IT Crowd and The Thick Of It.

Bruce Forsyth received a Bafta Fellowship, the academy’s highest accolade, which Paul Merton presented to him.

The 80-year-old entertainer said: ‘This is quite overwhelming. Morecambe and Wise and Charlie Chaplin were the only light entertainment people to get this award before.

‘This means so much to me. I can't be funny. There's nothing to be funny about. It's a wonderful, wonderful night for me’
