Luisa Omielan announces 2024 tour
Luisa Omielan has announced a new stand-up tour, all about being resentful about how she feels world being rigged against her.
The comic says the show, Bitter, was inspired by her enduring years of being told she's 'too loud, too crass, and too emotional’.
Omielan had a huge breakthrough at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe with What Would Beyoncé Do?! and went viral with a stand-up routine about the thigh gap – but while she has built up her own fan base, mainstream success has eluded her, save for a BBC Three series based on her Politics For Bitches stand-up show.
She complained: ‘Working hard doesn't cut it. The whole game feels rigged. Whatever you do, don't complain about it. Just smile, bitch. Write your gratitude journal and manifest.
‘Everyone in power seems to be either a self-serving, egotistical maniac or have the moral backbone of a flaccid dead fish.’
In Bitter, she talks about how women are treated differently than men, both in the comedy industry and the wider world,
Speaking to Mumble Comedy last year, she said: ‘TV decision makers continue to push the sexist trope that women aren’t funny, by not booking funny women, opting instead for reality TV stars, sports personalities and presenters. Whereas male comics can be seen on every channel travelling the world with their dad.’
‘Britain does not like women who like themselves and yet audiences crave them. Corporations are finally waking up to the buying power of half the population, think Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Barbie. It’s women’s money that is driving economic growth.’
The promotional pitch for Bitter concludes: Is she bitter? Of course she is. Are you angry? You should be. Is Bitter a comedy show? Absofuckinglutely.’
The show, which premiered at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, will tour from February until May, with tickets on sale from venues from today.
It also incorporates her annual Valentine's Party, to be held at the Clapham Grand in London. She said: 'After the gig, we'll knock out a power ballad and some En Vogue on Spotify and still have you on the last train home.'
