Maisie Adam on the trials of moving back home
Maisie Adam has complained about losing her privacy after she found herself living back with her parents.
She and her husband Mike are currently holed up with her mum and dad after buying their first home together and getting the builders in.
They’ve been there for about a month, which the comic says ‘is about three weeks too much’.
And speaking on the Dish from Waitrose podcast, she said: ‘It's really weird because you go back to that dynamic of when you last lived with them – which was when I was a child.
‘So genuinely, this happened the first night. She'll be so angry I'm telling this story, but I'm going to do it.
‘The first night my mum was like, "Oh, I need to show you the dress I'm gonna wear to your brother's wedding," which at this point was still three weeks away.
‘[Later], I get in the shower, like, I'm a 32-year-old woman naked in the shower washing myself, and I turn around and my mum's walked into the bathroom, wearing the dress. Just like, "Thoughts?" Like fascinator and all.
‘I was immediately trying to cover everything up, and my mum was going, "What? I've seen it all before." I was like, "Yeah, but crucially, the last time you saw this, I was six. It looked different, and I needed your help cleaning it. I'm now a grown adult lady just trying to shower."
'She was really putting it on me that I was weird for finding it odd. She was like, "Oh, you're so sensitive." Clopping out of the bathroom in her heels.
‘Like, it's great dress. But boundaries were drawn.'
She also says the building work at her property is stressful, adding: 'The builder sends us videos, which my husband loves. I find it genuinely anxiety-inducing. 'Cause it's like, oh, we can't turn back now 'cause you've just swung a digger through it.’
On the topic of food, which the podcast is about, Adam explained to hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett that she came up with the term MPTF to describe fancy dishes that are ‘More Plate Than Food’.
She said that one of their friends writes for a ‘very fancy magazine’ and ‘gets to experience wonderful new hotels that have been set up and restaurants as well
‘And – this is out of jealousy, but she'll put it on her Instagram, like a 12-plate tasting menu. It started by us replying, you know, the classic, "Oh, looks shit. Looks shit."
‘And then we were like, "Well, there's more plate than food." Me and Mike started replying to every single story she put on, "More plate than food, more plate than food." And then it just became, ‘MPTF, MPTF.’
‘I did go on one of these and I don't understand why they do it. I don't understand why they don't do what we've done, which is put all the nice food on one plate together where you can like mix it around. I think they're taking the piss when they do it. I do! It's picky bits! That is picky bits!’
