Channel 4 has appointed Andy Brereton as senior commissioning editor for comedy.

He joins from Shiny Button Productions,– a company he set up with Tom Davis and James De Frond to make shows including  King Gary, Murder They Hope and the upcoming Amazon comedy film Your Christmas or Mine.

He was previously head of development at Tiger Aspect, where he worked on Murder in Successville with Davis and De Frond, Crackanory and Murder They Hope prequel Murder On The Blackpool Express.

Charlie Perkins, Channel 4's new head of comedy, said: 'Andy's a triple threat and I'm thrilled to have him joining our team.

'He brings with him an incredible track record for conceiving, marshalling and delivering inventive shows which push the boundaries of scripted comedy. He's passionate about comedy in all its guises and he's a good and kind person who I'm really looking forward to working with.'

And Brereton returned the compliment, saying: 'I am delighted to be moving to Channel 4. Charlie is someone who has comedy in her heart and soul. She thinks differently and I was thrilled when she asked me to join her team.

'From Phoenix Nights to We Are Lady Parts, Channel 4 has always been the place to make unique comedy for everyone. It has nurtured comedy talent both in front and behind the camera and I can’t wait to get started in doing the same.'

Brereton takes up his job later this year, working alongside commissioning editor Laura Riseam and commissioning executive Joe Hullait.
