Comic says it's 'cathartic' to write about blackmail attempt

Joel Dommett is writing a TV script based on the time he was blackmailed in a catfishing scam.

About a decade ago, the stand-up was famously tricked into sending a video of himself masturbating to a woman he believed was called Staci Taylor. 

And when he got his big break in the 2016 series of I’m A Celebrity, the criminals demanded money. He refused and they posted the footage online. But Dommett turned the incident into stand-up.

And in a twist, the comic later met the woman whose face had been used by the extortioners, and they ended up dating.

‘I think it’s a really interesting story to tell,’ Dommett told The Mirror. ‘I’m actually finding it a cathartic, therapeutic experience to write about a decade on from when it happened even though, at the time, it could have finished my career.’

The father of two, now married to model Hannah Dommett-Cooper, added: ‘I’m part way through writing the scripts for the show and won’t be rushing to submit them to a TV company - I would prefer to have a really good product before I give it to people. But I love the idea of doing a comedy drama about my own life with myself in it.’

And he revealed that he hasn’t settled on a title yet, suggesting it might be as simple as I Got Caught With My Dick Out.
