Liverpool's Royal Court seeks comedy writers

Collaboration with the BBC

Liverpool’s Royal Court theatre is teaming up with the BBC in a hunt for new comedy writers for the venue.

Next year's Stage Write, the theatre’s free nine-month playwriting course, will be focused on those who want to write a comedy show.

The venue is the city’s biggest producing venue and has developed projects such as Motherland co-creator Helen Serafinowicz’s first theatre show, The Legend Of Rooney's Ring, last year.

Applications are open at the Stage Write section of the Royal Court’s website, and the deadline is November 23.

The programme is part of the legacy of the 2026 BBC Comedy Festival, hosted in the Royal Court last spring.

Separately, the BBC is looking for writers and writer-performers from the city to develop a sitcom.

Submissions of  ‘bold, character-led sitcom ideas that reflect Liverpool’s distinctive humour, communities and sense of place’ close next Monday.
