Man in court over Peter Kay bomb scare

Omar Majed allegedly 'barged' his way into venue

The man charged over the bomb scare that caused Peter Kay’s comedy show to be evacuated allegedly ‘barged’ his way into Birmingham’s Utilita Arena without a ticket.

Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today heard that Omar Majed, 19, told a police constable and others that a bomb may have  been left at the venue, requiring the evacuation of almost 13,000 fans.

But Majed was asked to leave court midway through today’s hearing after repeatedly refusing the judge’s request to sit down, and shouting that proposed bail conditions were ‘not acceptable’, it has been reported today.

Majed, of Washwood Heath, Birmingham, gave no indication how he would plead to the single charge of communicating false information to police. He has been remanded in custody until a Crown Court hearing on June 1.

No suspicious items were found at the arena, which was evacuated 45 minutes into Kay’s Better Late Than Never tour show on Friday.

At the time, Birmingham Police said: 'We're grateful to everyone for their co-operation and understanding. As always our priority is the safety of the public.'

Originally the force said a 'potential suspicious bag' was found at the arena, which prompted the evacuation.

The venue issued a statement confirming the discovery of a ‘potential suspicious bag’  nearby, adding: ‘The safety and security of our customers and colleagues is our highest priority. We can confirm everyone was safely evacuated and that the venue is secure.’

The venue also added: ''Our security measures include several overt and covert security measures, so whilst you may not see all operational security activity, you should be assured that it is ongoing.’

The scare came a day after the UK national threat level was raised from substantial, meaning an attack is likely, to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely.
