New stand-up streaming service to be launched

Nish Kumar's special will be the first exclusive to Gorilla Comedy+,

A US comedy company is launching a subscription streaming service dedicated entirely to stand-up, with a lineup that includes several well-known British acts.

Gorilla Comedy+, from Nashville-based 800 Pound Gorilla Media, goes live on May 5 with a library of more than 250 stand-up specials.

The company says the platform is designed to give comedians more direct access to their audiences, with plans to expand into original series and documentaries.

Among the British names involved at launch are Sarah Millican, Bill Bailey, Sara Pascoe and Kerry Godliman. Australian comedian Celia Pacquola, who won this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s best show award, will also feature, alongside Rhys Darby, David Cross and Patton Oswalt.

The first new exclusive special available to subscribers will be Nish Kumar’s Nish, Don’t Kill My Vibe, with further originals from Pete Holmes and Matt Rife to follow.

Gorilla Comedy+ will be priced at $9.99 per month (£7.40) or $99.99 (£74) annually in the US – but British pricing has yet to be confirmed.

800 Pound Gorilla says it already reaches around 20 million comedy fans a month across its existing platforms.  Company co-founder Ryan Bitzer, said the new service was intended to complement this. ’We designed it to make it easier for fans to discover and enjoy the comedians they love,’ he said.

Co-founder Damion Greiman said: ‘We’re building Gorilla Comedy+ as a place where the comedy world can come together, which hasn’t existed until now.

‘After 10 years in the middle with a lot of comics, it’s about helping them get to fans and keep building specials, series, movies and beyond.’

Whether such as service ‘hasn’t existed until now’ may be disputed as the UK-focussed NextUp launched in 2016.
