Multi-million-pound deal ready to be signed

The Inbetweeners is to be rebooted for Netflix, it has been reported.

The Sun says the streaming giant is readying a multi-million-pound deal to make another movie based on the Noughties comedy hit.

It is not clear if the original cast would be involved catching up with them as they enter their 40s, or whether it would cast new sixth-formers.

Plans for the comeback were reported by The Sun, which quoted an unnamed TV insider saying: ‘ Netflix have been keen to make the project happen partly because its enjoyed a bit of a renaissance since old episodes aired…  The deal is on the cusp of being fully rubber stamped, with discussions still happening about production timelines, storylines and cast.’

The teen sitcom was  first broadcast on E4, and featured  Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Emily Atack as school pupils.

It ran for three series from 2008 to 2010 and spawned a 2011 movie – which took £57million at the box office from a budget of £3.5millon – and a sequel for years later.

In the autumn it was revealed that the show’s creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley had struck a new deal with media giant Banijay UK, which now owns the rights to the show, for new projects.

At the time it was  not clear what format any revival would take., but Jonathan Blyth, managing director of the pair’s production company Fudge Park said: ‘This is a wonderful moment for fans, there are exciting conversations afoot and more news to follow.’

And Patrick Holland, CEO of Banijay UK added that  Morris and Beesley ‘have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audiences old and new’.
