Comedian faced 'alarming and distressing' behaviour
A man has been found guilty of stalking Joe Lycett.
Sam Egerton had targeted the comedian online and been recorded shouting outside his house after he found out they lived on the same street in Kings Heath in Birmingham.
In social media posts he made references to the comic’s family and the most troubling read: ‘You are in the deepest hell, you will die very soon,’ Birmingham magistrates heard. In others he boasted about making Lycett feel ‘rattled’.
Egerton, 34, had denied the charges and told the court it was Lycett’s responsibility to ‘send someone round to check that I'm OK… By not dealing with me properly he has caused these chains of events.’
The Birmingham Mail reports that the hearing was often chaotic, with Egerton making outbursts about ‘Satanic cults’ and admiring he had previously been sectioned.
In comments reported by the BBC, district judge Tanweer Ikram said it was clear the defendant's behaviour had caused the comedian ‘concern for his own safety and wellbeing’.
Lycett had described the social media posts as 'alarming and distressing’ but said he bore Egerton no ill will and hoped he would get the help and support he needed rather than being locked up.
The judge ordered a psychiatric assessment ahead of sentencing on April 24.
