Last One Laughing scoops a Broadcast Award

Garlands for Here We Go and Big Boys too

Last One Laughing UK was named best entertainment programme at the Broadcast Awards last night.

Here We Go won the best comedy category, and Big Boys best comedy-drama, in the accolades handed out by the leading TV industry website.

Judges called Amazon reality show Last One Laughing a  ‘shot in the arm for comedy entertainment’ and praised its ‘stand-out casting that elevated the format into something truly special’.

Another praised the camera set-up which captured ‘spontaneous moments that added to the sense of jeopardy and made the show so compelling’.

The show, which has been renewed for a second series, attracted 6million viewers in its first month of release in the UK, making it the second most popular series launch ever for Prime Video beaten only by Clarkson's Farm.

Last One Laughing saw off competition from fellow nominees  A League Of Their Own, Michael McIntyre's Big Show, Strictly Come Dancing, The Assembly, The Great British Bake Off.

In naming Tom Basden’s  Here We Go as best comedy programme,  judges noted that the technique of shooting scenes as if through teenage son Sam's video camera, ‘creat[es] an intimacy that is a technical challenge and triumph behind the scenes. Director Will Sinclair, director of photography Jeremy Hewson and editor Andy Kinnear all work together to maintain the format without sacrificing story or comedy - no mean feat.’

Judges also praised the series' distinctive characters, with rave reviews of Katherine Parkinson, Jim Howick and Alison Steadman's performances.

And they praised the plot, structure and pace, with one calling it ‘funny, sharp, as well as being well plotted and performed… it’s a joyful watch’.

Shortlisted in this category were Juice, Mr Bigstuff, Pushers, Smoggie Queens andSuch Brave Girls.

Jack Rooke's semi-autobiographical sitcom  Big Boys  was described by judges as a ‘masterpiece’… and was widely recognised for its deftness in both writing and acting.

‘The show's long-running themes of grief and mental health were brought to a head in the final episode, which evoked strong personal responses from the judges,’ Broadcast said. ‘They praised the show for dealing with a difficult topic with hope and humour. Comedy and drama stood side-by-side throughout the series.’

Other shortlisted programmes in the comedy-drama category were Alma's Not Normal, Am I Being Unreasonable?, Boarders, Death Valley and Gavin & Stacey.
