Derry Girls creator gets freedom of the city

Honour for Lisa McGee

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee is to be given the freedom of her hometown where she set her Channel 4 sitcom.

SDLP councillor Martin Reilly put forward the proposal in recognition of the ‘global positive impact’ her work has had on the city.

After the rest of Derry City and Strabane District Council  unanimously agreed he tweeted: ‘As Lisa will be the first woman to receive the Freedom of the City she can be proud that her creation of Derry Girls has broken the mould.’

In reply, McGee said she was ‘stunned and shocked and very honoured’.

The  comedy came to an end in May after three series.
