Radio Ulster orders true crime mockmentary

With husband-and-wife comics Diona Doherty and Sean Hegarty

BBC Radio Ulster has commissioned a full series of a true crime mockumentary, following a pilot earlier this year.

What Happens In Ulster stars comedian Diona Doherty as  an ambitious young reporter on the trail of criminal activities in Northern Ireland.

Her husband, fellow comic Sean Hegarty, below, also stars as the mayor in the show, written and produced by Marc McElroy, whose credits include Soft Border Patrol and the Shane Todd Show.

A one-off aired in the summer, revolving around a bigamist with three husbands who mysteriously vanished. Now six more episodes have been made, to air on BBC Radio Ulster from February 27 in a 10.30pm slot.

Doherty is part of the Soft Border Patrol ensemble and guest starred in an episode of Derry Girls, playing the Ukranian Katya. While Hegarty is a social media hit, whose character Rodney has amassed 60 million online views, and who made the semi-finals of Ireland’s Got Talent in 2018.

Doherty has also been commissioned by the BBC to make a comedy film entitled Sh*t Stepmum, based on her experience of parenting three boys, now aged 16, 13 and 11.

Last month the couple announced they were expecting their first child together – after six years of fertilily treatment, eventually travelling to Czechia for IVF.
