Rhys Thomas writes an Artful Dodger comedy

Rhys Thomas has written a Dickens-inspired children’s comedy for the BBC.

Dodger is based on the infamous pickpocket from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist and is due to air on CBBC later this year or early next.

Known for his role on Bellamy’s People and The Fast Show, Thomas previously created spoof rock musician Brian Pern with Simon Day and the annual Year In The Life Of A Year round-ups.

His new pilot, Bumps, written with his wife Lucy Montgomery and starring Amanda Redman as a woman who decides to become a mother again in her 60s, airs on BBC One tomorrow night.

Showbiz trade website Deadline reports that Dodger will be made by NBCUniversal International Studios. with former BBC comedy chief Mark Freeland as the executive producer.
