Playing a drag queen in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Stand-up Phil Nichol has joined the cast of West End musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie – playing a middle-aged drag queen called Hugo.

The show is based on the 2011 documentary Jamie: Drag Queen At 16, about a misfit teenager trying to find his feet after his Dad's left home.

Hugo – whose alter ego is called Loco Chanel – acts as a mentor to the teenager, inducting him into the world of drag.

Nichol's previously played gay nightclub impresario  Philip Sallon in Boy George's musical Taboo, which premièred in the West End in 2002.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie attracted rave reviews when it premiered at the Sheffield Crucible last year, and transfers to the Apollo Theatre from November 6.

John McCrea will reprise his role of Jamie, alongside the majority of the Sheffield cast, including: Josie Walker as mum Margaret; Thin Blue Line star Mina Anwar as her best friend Lee; and Tamsin Carroll as his teacher. 

The show’s music is by Dan Gillespie Sells, lead singer of The Feeling, and the book is by Tom MacRae, who wrote the 2012 Comedy Central sitcom Threesome.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is scheduled to run at the Apollo until April 21.
