To open in Washington in October

Tina Fey is adapting the 2004 Lindsay Lohan movie Mean Girls into a stage musical.

The show will launch at the National Theatre in Washington DC, it has been announced today.

30 Rock creator Fey will write the book with her husband, Jeff Richmond writing the score, with lyrics from Nell Benjamin, who previously worked on Legally Blonde. 

Casey Nicholaw, who choreographed  Monty Python's Spamalot and The Book of Mormon, will direct.

The theatre said: ‘We are thrilled to introduce our season featuring the anticipated world premiere of the Broadway-bound new musical Mean Girls, with a book by nine-time Emmy Award winner Tina Fey.’

Its plot follows that of the movie with the naive Cady Heron moving into the Illinois suburbs and having to adapt to the cruel laws that govern teenage populartiy.

Mean Girls will run in Washington from October 31 to December 3.
