Gervais: I've been asked back to the Globes

Here are some of his gags from last night

Ricky Gervais says he's been asked back to host the Golden Globes.

The comic told Hollywood website Deadline that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had invited him to host a fifth ceremony, following his performance at last night's bash.

However, no final decision on future hosts has officially been made.

Gervais started last night's ceremony in typically abrasive style, telling the audience of A-listers to: 'Shut up, you disgusting, pill-popping, sexual deviant scum.'

But then he said: 'Relax, I'm going to try and be nice. I've changed a lot. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously.'

His vow turned out to be insincere, as his script mocked many in the room.

Before introducing Mel Gibson, he said: 'A few years ago on this show I made a joke about Mel Gibson getting a bit drunk and saying a few unsavoury things. Listen, I still feel a bit bad for it… I want to say something nice about Mel before he comes out, so OK, here you go: I'd rather have a drink with him in his hotel room tonight, than with Bill Cosby.'

As the actor came on stage, Gervais whispered something in Gibson's ear, and later explained on Twitter that it was: 'What the fuck does Sugar Tits even mean?' – the phrase the Mad Max star said to a female police officer when he was arrested for drink-driving in 2006

Other quips included: 'He's been the only person Ben Affleck hasn't been unfaithful to. Please welcome Matt Damon' and 'Joy and Trainwreck, no not the names of Charlie Sheen's two favourite hookers… the films of our next two presenters.'

During his opening remarks, Gervais quipped: 'I'm going to get this monologue out of the way and then go into hiding. Not even Sean Penn will find me… Snitch.'

He also joked: 'The president of the HFPA just told me if I say anything offensive, or crass, he's going to come out here personally and pull me off. Yes, that is the level… An old man pulling me off.'

Comedies did not fare well in the awards. The best comedy movie was given to The Martian, a clearly dramatic film with just a few humourous moments. Gervais joked: 'To be fair, The Martian was a lot funnier than Pixels, but then again, so was Schindler's List.'

Its star Matt Damon won the best actor award in the same category, with Jennifer Lawrence taking best actress in the quirky semi-biographical drama Joy.

And because comedy is lumped in with music, two of the three TV awards in the category went to Amazon Prime's Mozart in the Jungle

Gervais has won three Golden Globes himself, and he said of his three awards: 'One I keep by the bed 'cause… doesn't matter why…. It is just the right shape and size. So, to be clear, that was a joke about me shoving Golden Globes, that I've won, up my ass. And they asked me to host four times!'

Here are some of his comments:
