Classic clips go online

More than 70 classic comedy clips from Monty Python, Benny Hill and Michael Bentine have gone online.

The extracts can be downloaded from the new website ClassicComedy.net, which has been set up by Bentine's son Richard.

Its aim is to distribute sketches that are rarely seen on TV and not available on videos because broadcasters think there is not enough demand.

The website aims to offer many clips free, supported by sponsorship, while fans will have to pay for others.

Bentine said: "As the keeper of my father's rights, I was continually told by broadcasters and publishers that his material was unlikely to be seen again. The Bumblies, Pottytime, Squareworld, even the Goons - all confined to some cupboard somewhere because of the limited capacity available in broadcasters' schedules, and the decline in shelf-space (and sales) for comedy videos.

"But there is an answer - the internet. Comedy is already the most forwarded subject on the web, but very little video is available."

The site will also offer an exclusive game based around Monty Python and The Holy Grail when it officially launches on Monday.

However, the clips - in Real or Windows Media format - are available to download now.
