Rosie Jones to make her film debut
Dark comedy from her Pushers collaborator Peter Fellows
Rosie Jones is to appear in her first movie.
The comedian has been cast in the dark comedy Bad Major alongside White Lotus star Jason Isaacs and Frozen’s Josh Gad.
Set in the Second World War, it revolves around a family who welcomes their son's volatile commanding officer into their rural home to secure his safety. But the sociopathic major forces them to absurd and devastating extremes.
It is being directed by Peter Fellows, a long-time Armando Iannucci collaborator who has worked on Veep and Avenue 5, the critically acclaimed feature films The Death of Stalin and The Personal History of David Copperfield.
And he also co-created the Channel 4 comedy Pushers with Jones.
Bad Major is Fellows’ directorial debut, and he wrote the script based on The Tót Family novella by István Örkény, The late Hungarian writer is known for grotesque storytelling, influenced by his time in Soviet labour camp in World War Two.
Fellows said: ‘I’m thrilled to be making Bad Major with this fantastic ensemble of brilliantly funny, powerful actors.
'Based on István Örkény’s masterpiece of psychological warfare, family dynamics and cultural conditioning, my adaptation will ground these themes within a properly funny, heart-wrenching film about desperation, loss and the absurd lengths to which human beings will go to in order to protect the ones they love.’
Fabien Westerhoff of film sales agent Global Constellation said: ‘Bad Major blends sharp humour with strong audience appeal to explore the frightening lengths love can push us to.’ His company was seeking deals to distribute the movie at last month’s European Film Market in Berlin.
The cast also includes Derek Jacobi and Preacher star Ruth Negga.
Filming is due to take place in Hungary later this year, with Jones saying: ‘It's going to be brilliant.’
