Are satirists secretly happy Donald Trump got reelected?
Stephen Colbert has the perfect answer for those who said a Donald Trump victory is good for satirists.
Speaking on The Late Show after the election vote came in, the comedian said: ‘As a late-night host, people often say to me, "Come on, part of has gotta want Trump to win, because he gives you so much material to work with."
‘No, no. No one tells the guy who cleans the bathroom, "Wow, you must love it when someone has explosive diarrhoea. There’s so much material for you to work with."’
The host started his show by saying: ‘’Well, fuck. It happened… again. After a bizarre and vicious campaign fuelled by a desperate need not to go to jail, Donald Trump has won the 2024 election’ – attracting boos from his audience.
He then joked: ‘All day yesterday, I was walking around, proudly wearing my "I voted" sticker. Today, I wore my "I am questioning my fundamental belief in the goodness of humanity" sticker.’
In other late-night shows, Jimmy Kimmel joked that Trump was 'like the emperor from Star Wars: He's old, he's evil and he keeps coming back with no reasonable explanation whatsoever'.
Jimmy Fallon likened the election to 'America getting back together with its crazy ex'.
He joked that the electoral result of 224 vs. 292 was also 'Trump's made-up weight versus his actual weight' .
