One of Tommy Cooper's famous hats is up for auction

One of Tommy Cooper’s original fezzes is to go under the hammer.

Auctioneers have set an  estimate of £2,000 to £3,000 for the headgear, made by his suppliers Lamrani Freres.

It comes from the memorabilia collection of a South Wales entertainer who compered a gig at the Stardust Variety Club, Usk, in the 1970s where the comedy magician performed. 

The lot, which is being sold by East Bristol Auctions on May 28, includes a handwritten letter of provenance.

Auctioneers say the felt has come away in some small areas to the rim, but otherwise it’s in ‘good vintage condition’. Bid here.

Cooper adopted the fez as his stage outfit while performing for the troops in Egypt. He usually wore a pith helmet, but forgot it - so swiped the hat from a passing waiter instead. 

In 2013, another of Cooper’s fezzes fetched £620 at auction.
