What happened at the end of Catastrophe?

Sharon Horgan reveals whether her character lived or died

comedyIt was one of the most agonisingly ambiguous series endings since The Sopranos.

In Catastrophe, Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney’s characters  were last seen as tiny dots drifting far offshore in an ocean bay prone to lethal rip tides, leaving their oblivious children sleeping in the car on shore.

Now Horgan has revealed – in her mind, at least – the fate of the couple.

During the recording of tonight’s edition of the  Graham Norton Show, the writer was asked if both characters die at the end of the final episode.

She replied: ‘No.  I mean, maybe. It was supposed to be ambiguous.  You could take it as that.

‘Rob always thought there was a slightly dark ending possibility, but I always thought they made it back to shore.  They’d had a fright, but they made it back.

‘It’s supposed to be both and to give you hope as well as fear for their future.’

Also appearing on tonight’s show, which airs on BBC One at 10.35pm, are actors Miriam Margolyes,  Daniel Radcliffe and Alan Cumming,  and singer-songwriter Craig David.
