Drawing the raffle... it's Dave Chappelle

Star comic surprises punters at a Bristol pub

comedyDrawing the raffle is seen as one of the ultimate ignominies for an upcoming comic.

So kudos to Bristol's Star and Garter pub who managed to rope in none other than Dave Chappelle to pick their winning tickets this weekend.

The Emmy-winning stand-up, who is performing at London's Hackney Empire tonight, was in Bristol on Saturday for the re-opening of the boozer and music venue, which closed in 2017 after the death of landlord Louis Hayles.

Video of the carnival-style event shows Chappelle handing over a stuffed toy lion to one lucky winner and instructing him to 'put some baby oil on that thing and go to town'.

Also appearing at the celebration were magician Dynamo and musician Damian Marley, and there was a DJ set from local luminary Roni Size.

Taking to Twitter, @JayDown9 posted: 'I had to text my mate and tell him his mum was onstage getting her prize of goat meat from David Chappelle, best text ever 😂'

@AdamTutton added: 'Was walking to have a pint at the Star & Garter and I end walking past Dave Chapelle doing a raffle ... and then see Bob Marley’s son singing Welcome to Jamrock in front of Bristol’s finest. You gotta love this city... #bristol #damienmarley #davechapelle'

Locals had feared that the much-loved venue, described as the spiritual home of trip hop pioneers Massive Attack, would be be turned into luxury flats after it was put up for sale.

But Glastonbury organiser and promoter Malcolm Haynes stepped in to take over and relaunch the venue.
