The suggestion that Donald Trump's presidency is a godsend to comedians has long been questioned.

Now Patton Oswalt has come up with a very memorable analogy about why his never-ending stream of erratic, controversial behaviour is overwhelming for satirists trying to keep up.

Speaking on Conan O'Brien's TBS show in America last night, Oswald said: 'Trump is like… imagine there’s a guy out on the sidewalk and he’s taking a dump on the pavement and he’s yelling about Hitler. And he’s hanging wallpaper.

'So you think of the funniest joke about a guy taking a dump on the sidewalk, and as you turn to tell your friend behind you, he has scooped up the poop and made a sombrero out of it. So you’re about to tell your friend and he’s like "Dude, he’s moved on."'

Oswalt then tried another analogy, suggesting Trump was like 'sour cream in a sauna'.

'There’s no shelf life,' he explained. 'You’re running towards it with your chip and NO! It’s spoiled.'
