Stew anyone?

When Sean Hughes went on Come Dine With Me

comedyAs the comedy world mourns Sean Hughes, let's remember the time when he appeared in a celebrity version of Come Dine With Me – and served the same meal for all three courses: stew.

The comic appeared in a 2011 charity special alongside Gina Yashere, Paul Tonkinson and Duncan ‘Chase Me’ Norvelle – who weren’t all impressed by his efforts.

His starter was the vegetarian stew which he called Squibby’s Delight; then he added dumpling balls for the main course, Mumsy’s Surprise.

And for his finale, he squished the stew into balls, which he deep-fried, sprinkled with sugar and served  with a shop-bought custard tart – a dish which he called Irish Oddlums

When challenged over the similarity between dishes, Hughes insisted: ‘It’s just totally different!’ –

He then compared himself to the greatest Renaissance master. ‘With Da  Vinci did they go, ‘I really like that painting, but it’s really like the other one you did with Jesus in it"? Jesus is in them all. It’s just disrespectful to a craftsman like myself.’

His cheek amused Yashere, but Tonkinson was distinctly unimpressed, grumbling over the dessert: ‘It is the same thing crumbled, isn’t it?’

In the final scores, Hughes came last... by quite a long way.
