Proceeds from a work-in-progress gig at the South London venue

Russell Howard has donated £5,000 to the fundraising campaign to save the Clapham Grand in South London.

The figure represents his proceeds from the work in progress gig he performed at the historic venue at the weekend.

That show was his third sold-out night there, with three more to go over the coming Sundays following the announcement of new dates on October 4 and 11.

Howard said: ‘I’m really happy to be continuing my comedy journey out of lockdown at the iconic Clapham Grand. The shows I’ve done so far have been great, and it is a pleasure to be back indoors, performing to comedy fans in a venue that I love.

‘It is an honour to be able to support the Save the Grand cause and do my bit to help save this iconic London venue.’

The Save the Grand campaign has now raised more than £62,000 to keep the 120-year-old venue open. Its current capacity is  400, down from the 1,250 that would normally acccomodate
