Iain Lee announces his first tour
...having previously performed Imposter Syndrome in fans' homes
Former 11 O'Clock Show host and 2017 I'm A Celebrity… contestant Iain Lee is going on his first tour, with a show called Imposter Syndrome.
It promises some of the best – ‘and most embarrassing’ – clips from his career, including how he tricked Kate Garroway on Good Morning Britain and Bob Mortimer’s prank calls to his radio show.
Lee also says he’ll reveal what Ricky Gervais and Sacha Baron Cohen were really like from his time working with them on the 11 O’Clock Show, his obsession with Ghostbusters 2 and the time he got trapped down a well.
The comic has previously toured the show around fans’ homes, charging £350 a time. It marked his return to comedy, after training to be a counsellor in 2020 – but was mocked in some parts of the media.
In an interview with The Telegraph, he said: ‘I’m connecting after years of not wanting to perform. Two hours, £350, and I’ll be honest, what I’m earning with the counselling, 350 quid is a lot of money to me as well. People see it as a fall from grace. I’m not on telly, and I want to feed my kids and pay my mortgage.
‘I was surprised by the backlash. I had an interview with Stephen Nolan, the BBC presenter earning over £400,000, for whom £350 is a blink, saying, "Oh, you’re not on TV, you’re a failure, you’re a has-been, you’re not relevant." I’m relevant to my two boys, my two stepdaughters and Katherine [Boyle, his wife and podcast cohost].
‘After this conversation, I’m off to someone’s house to perform a gig that they’ve specifically asked for. It’s fun. I’m a bit nervous, but I know it will go okay, and if it doesn’t, it’s two hours of our lives, and that’s all right, you know?’
He also admitted that at one of these gigs the couple wanted ‘extras,’ kissing during the show, and afterwards inviting him to ‘stay for some fun?’ – but he made his excuses and left.
