Celebrating the comedian's 100th birthday
Work has started on a new mural celebrating Eric Morecambe in the Lancashire seaside town that gave the comedian his name.
The work is part of a series of events marking what would have been his 100th birthday.
Artists Shane Johnstone and Molly Bland are completing the piece, on the side of the Warehouse, formerly Hitchen's, on Marine Road Central.
Based on an original concept by fellow local artist Jamie Jenkinson, it shows a young Eric and his comedy partner Ernie Wise in a pose inspired by a classic archive image from a vintage Radio Times listing.
The project has been commissioned by Morecambe Business Improvement District,.
The mural will be officially unveiled by Eric's children Gary and Gail when they visit Morecambe during the week of his centenary, which falls on Thursday, May 14.
David Waddington, chair of Morecambe BID, said: 'This mural is a brilliant way to celebrate Eric's 100th birthday and create something lasting for the town.
'Eric Morecambe remains an iconic figure not just locally, but nationally, and it feels right that we mark this milestone with a legacy project that residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come.'
A heritage exhibition, Follow the Sunshine, opens at Morecambe Heritage Centre on May 12.
