Christmas special now seen by 7.4million
The Christmas special of Amandaland has been named the most-watched comedy of 2025.
The show – starring Lucy Punch, Joanna Lumley, Philippa Dunne and guest star Jennifer Saunders – was seen by 7.4million viewers within 28 days of its Christmas Day broadcast.
It was the 7th most watched show on the day itself, with 3.2million, but catch-up viewing puts in into second place, behind the BBC’s The Scarecrows’ Wedding with 8.7 million.
However, it’s a long way behind the Gavin & Stacey finale of 2024, which was seen by 20.9million viewers in the 28-day window.
And overall the most-watched show of 2025 was the finale of Celebrity Traitors, which has a 28-day audience of 15.4million, according to research by Barb.
BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips, said: ‘It’s remarkable to think that Amanda’s move to SoHa only happened last year and yet in such a short space of time it has become the mother of all comedies, taking the number one spot for 2025. We are really proud of this iconic show.’
Co-writer and creator Holly Walsh and co-writer Laurence Rickard said in a statement: 'We are delighted to see a sitcom find such a large audience, and even more delighted that it’s the one we wrote. We felt truly honoured to have been asked for a Christmas Special and are touched that so many people made it a part of their festivities. Huge thanks to our fantastic cast and crew for bringing the show to life.’
Series two will return to BBC iPlayer and BBC One this year for six more half-hour episodes .
