Reviving the spirit of Abbott and Costello

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are reuniting for a horror comedy movie called Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein.

The project is being shot this summer and has clear echoes of the classic Abbott and Costello monster films of the 1940s and 1950s.

In it the stars of the 1990s self-titled sitcom play two delivery drivers who arrive at a creepy, out-of-place castle and accidentally awaken Frankenstein’s monster

The pair announced the new project on Amazon Prime Video’s Good Sports last night. Thompson – Saturday Night Live’s longest-tenured cast member – usually co-hosts with Kevin Hart, but last night Mitchell stepped in.

In a statement, Thompson explained: ‘Kel and I have always loved finding new ways to work together, and this project felt like the perfect mix of nostalgia, comedy, and something completely unexpected. We’re excited to bring a fresh take on a classic monster story and have some fun doing it."

Mitchell added: ‘Coming back together always feels natural, and this lets us tap into everything people love about our dynamic while trying something totally new. It’s funny, it’s scary, and it’s a great ride.’

The movie has been scripted by Jonah Feingold, who gained attention through the online 2014 video Star Wars Wes Anderson, which parodied the trailer of The Force Awakens, and went on to make movies including  Dating & New York, and At Midnight.

Thompson and Mitchell first started working together on the Nickelodeon sketch show All That in 1994, before their own series, which ran from 1996 to 2001. They also starred together in the 1997  movie Good Burger, which produced a sequel in 2023. Last year Thompson teased a third movie in the franchise, but promised fans they would not make fans wait ‘over 15 years’ for it.

Released in 1948, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein set off a series of movies in which they also met the Invisible Man, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and the Mummy as well as ‘The Killer, Boris Karloff’.
