Simpsons movie gets a sequel
July 2027 release date set
A new Simpsons movie is to be released in July 2027 – 20 years to the month after the original.
No details of the feature length project have been released, but the date was confirmed by Walt Disney Studios.
The 2007 spin-off took $536million at the box office on a budget of $75million and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film.
However, the popularity of the animated comedy has declined since then. The 18th series, which ran in 2006-2007, attracted an average 8.6million viewers per episode in the US. The last episode of season 36, which aired in May, was seen by 540,000 Americans as it was broadcast.
Season 37 started on Fox on Sunday, with its 791st episode revolving around Marge introducing Lisa to fictional 1990s teen drama Keagan's Pond. The Simpsons is now the longest-running US scripted primetime series of all time.
The new movie is slated for release on July 23, 2027. A teaser poster was shared on Instagram with a picture of a doughnut being grabbed – similar to the image that promoted the first film – and a tagline that read: ‘Homer’s coming back for seconds.’
