Jane Horrocks, Jamali Maddix and Stevie Martin join Here We Go
Series three guest stars revealed
Ab Fab’s Jane Horrocks and former Taskmaster contestants Jamali Maddix and Stevie Martin all have guest roles in the third series of Here We Go.
Horrocks plays Ethel Ticehurst, taking on Alison Steadman’s Sue in a high-stakes game of Uno in the BBC sitcom, while Maddix plays locksmith Jon Boy in an episode where the Jessop family get locked in the house.
Meanwhile, Martin appears to be playing a scuba diving instructor in an episode set in Malta. The official image from that episode shows only the back of her head, right:
Series creator Tom Basden, who also plays Robin, admitted it ‘took a lot of persuading’ to get producers to agree to fund the overseas episode.
That episode, the sixth in the seven-part series, also features Spooks star Robert Glenister as the father of Katherine Parkinson’s character Rachel.
Basden said: ‘That episode is huge fun and also an opportunity to meet Rachel's dad, Michael, played by Robert Glenister, who's just fantastic, and gives us a lot of background to Rachel's family, which has been hinted at in series one and two, but we've never really seen up close.’
Parkinson added: ‘We had a really nice time there. Robert Glenister was amazing, and I really liked the dynamic with him.’
Other guest stars in the series – which returns to BBC One on Friday July 25 – include This Time With Alan Partridge’s Susannah Fielding and Cardinal Burns star Seb Cardinal as Susie and Joe, the Jessops’ new neighbours. They star in episode two, entitled Mum’s Bad Teeth, which also features London metal band Imperium.
Another storyline features Robin persuading the family to go on a live action roleplay weekend, where everyone dresses up as fantasy characters to drink mead and have sword fights in the woods.
Freya Parks, who plays Amy said the ‘really fun costumes’ made that one of her favourite episodes.
She said: ‘I particularly enjoyed seeing Katherine and Jim [Howick] in theirs, they really suited them. It was a very fun day frolicking in the forest.’
However, most of the cast said their favourite episode was the series finale, in which Howick’s character gets baptised in order to become a godparent.
Steadman said: ‘It was just absolutely hilarious, as Jim always is. He only has to turn his head left or right and I am on the floor laughing! That scene was absolutely brilliant.’
Parkinson said: ‘It was so well played, and Jim did it so brilliantly.’
And Tori Allen-Martin, who plays Cherry, said: ‘It was also very enjoyable watching Paul being baptised in a lake in the middle of nowhere. We were in a rural area of natural beauty in the UK and Jim got dunked in a lake repeatedly, which was very funny. Something for viewers to look forward to.’
That episode also features a number of guest stars including comedians Ed Kear, Horatio Gould, Sunil Patel and Kevin ‘KG’ Garry (Paul in Ted Lasso) as well as Two Pints of Lager and Bridgerton actress Kathryn Drysdale as Cherry’s personal trainer Katie.
Basden, above, said: ‘What comes with a third series is that you know the characters really well by now and you can really tailor storylines for both the characters and the actors and what you think everyone's going to enjoy.
‘I think you can be a little bit more ambitious with the stories. On a later series, you can try things that are a little bit more crazy or a little bit more strange.’
One episode of the new series, set in Liverpool, was written by The Pin duo of Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, whose film Deep Cover dropped on Amazon’s Prime Video last month.
Episode 1: Mum & Dad’s Anniversary
It’s Rachel and Paul’s wedding anniversary and the family rise to the occasion with an array of gifts including barbeques, an escape room experience and a Bulgarian smart speaker called ‘Tim’. Meanwhile there’s a local crime wave, and in unrelated news Paul has developed a rash on what he’s choosing to call his ‘upper thigh’. All of which results in a particularly memorable wedding anniversary for Rachel and Paul.
Mum & Dad’s Anniversary also guest stars Jamali Maddix (Hate Thy Neighbour) as smart-lock technician Jon Boy.
Episode 2: Mum’s Bad Tooth
New neighbours are moving in next door, and Rachel intends to befriend them at any cost. Meanwhile Sue has started bingeing ultraviolent horror movies with her friend Prudence, and Paul is beginning to suspect he’s getting a reputation for being boring…surely not. He’s a former Olympian, for goodness sake!
Mum’s Bad Tooth also stars James McGregor and Abby Vicky-Russell, Josephine Lloyd-Welcome (The Cleaner), the thrash metal band Imperium, and guest stars Susannah Fielding (This Time With Alan Partridge), Seb Cardinal (Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy) as new neighbours Susie and Joe.
Episode 3: Robin’s LARP Festival
Big news: Paul’s a mentor. He’s been buddied up with a young police officer called Lee, poor lad, and is preparing to impart some wisdom. Meanwhile Rachel is helping Sam prep for his potentially incredibly dangerous Duke of Edinburgh expedition. And Robin is trying to persuade Cherry to join him for a live action roleplay weekend, where everyone dresses up as fantasy characters to drink mead and have sword fights in the woods; none of which appeals to the heavily pregnant Cherry. But the biggest challenge of all is faced by Sue, who can’t open a jar of gherkins.
Robin’s LARP Festival also includes Pavel Douglas, Andrey Rogozin, Paul Hawkyard, Zayne Wint, Austin Haynes, and Will Barton, and guest stars Tom Gaskin (My Lady Jane).
Episode 4: Our Trip to Liverpool
Rachel finds herself the victim of an online scam and decides to do the only sensible thing: track down and confront the scammers face to face. Luckily, Paul is a highly trained police officer, well-suited to confrontations with potentially dangerous criminals. Meanwhile, Amy gets spotted by a modelling agency talent scout, which inspires Cherry and Robin to cash in on their new baby by getting him signed up for some child modelling too.
Our Trip to Liverpool was written by Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen with a story by Tom Basden, and also stars Jim Kelly, Rachael McGuinness, Sarah Daykin, Eileen O’Brien and David Hallows.
Episode 5: Granny’s Uno Hustle
Amy and her girlfriend Maya have been going through a bit of a rough patch, which is sad for them but great news for Rachel who is keen to get some practise as a couple’s therapist. Meanwhile Sue has been drawn by the seductive call of bingo. She’s entered the world of gambling and vice, and before long she’s playing a high stakes game of Uno which she must win at any cost.
Granny’s Uno Hustle also stars Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous), Ed Kear (The Batman) and Jon Furlong (Adolescence).
Episode 6: Dad’s Red Hat
The Jessops are visiting Rachel and Robin’s dad in Malta, for the holiday of a lifetime. The only thing is, they all have quite different ideas about what makes a good holiday: Amy wants to paint the town red, Robin wants to try scuba diving, Paul wants to visit every historical monument in the guidebook, Cherry wants to chill by the pool, and Rachel wants to address some long-standing grievances with her father via the medium of lengthy and intense conversations about her feelings. It seems unlikely that everyone’s going to get what they want from the holiday, especially given that the swimming pool is out of order.
Dad’s Red Hat’also includes Stevie Martin (Taskmaster) and Bettina Paris (Breeders), and guest stars Robert Glenister (Sherwood) as Rachel and Robin’s dad Michael.
Episode 7: Amy’s Big Gig
Rachel and Paul are going to be baby Atlas’ godparents, so long as Paul can get himself baptised first. Dean has got an amazing new girlfriend, Katie, who also happens to be a personal trainer; it turns out that the secret to eternal youth is doing plenty of squats, so Rachel goes for it. Meanwhile the newly single Amy is throwing herself into her music, getting ready to take to the stage at Bedford Battle of the Bands (BBOB) with her bandmate G (don’t call him Graham). Needless to say, Amy’s granny Sue is their biggest fan.
Amy’s Big Gig also stars Ed Kear (The Batman), Jon Furlong (Adolescence), Richard Nock, Horatio Gould (Fin Vs The Internet), Sunil Patel (Mandy), Kevin ‘KG’ Garry (Ted Lasso) and Kathryn Drysdale (Bridgerton) as Cherry’s personal trainer Katie.
