Smoggie Queens wins best comedy gong

At the Broadcast Digital Awards

Smoggie Queens has been named best comedy at the Broadcast Digital Awards.

Judges said Phil Dunning's sitcom about a tight-knit group of LGBTQ+ friends in Middlesbrough was ‘inclusive, funny and smart’.

The series was praised for its combination of character work and physical comedy and for ‘ticking the box’  for representation and regional programming.

One judge noted that the BBC Three series achieved the much sought-after combination of being ‘totally specific, yet completely universal’.

The programme – which also stars Mark Benton, Alexandra Mardell, Elijah Young and Patsy Lowe – has already been renewed for a second series.

Also up for comedy in the awards, which recognise programmes on non-terrestrial TV  channels - were Brassic, Daddy Issues, Dinosaur, Only Child and Trying.

Meanwhile Peaked, the Channel 4 Comedy Blap pilot set in rural Derbyshire from double act  Ada Player and Bron Waugh  was named best short-form scripted show and animated CBBC sitcom Super Happy Magic Forest, the new animated CBBC sitcom, won the award for best digital children's content.
