Putting the trans in transgression
The best of the week's comedy on TV, radio and on demand
Our pick of the comedy on TV, radio and streaming this week…:
Sunday June 22
CHRISTOPHER MACARTHUR BOYD: SCARY TIMES: This is the first of five independently produced stand-up specials from Scottish comedians to be released for free over the comic weeks, by the team behind the Some Laugh podacast. Future weeks feature Marc Jennings, Rosco McClelland, Liam Withnail and Stuart McPherson. Macarthur-Boyd said: ‘Collectively we’ve spent more than £15,000 of our own money to self-finance these tapings. We’re really proud of them, and just want to get as many eyes on them as possible.' It goes live at 8pm.
SALTBURN: The dark comedy sexual pyschothriller – starring Barry Keoghan as a young man inveigling his way into an upper-class family – gets a terrestrial TV airing. BBC One, 10.30pm
Monday June 23
CELEBRITY PUZZLING: Nobody mention Richard Osman's House Of Games as 5 launches a new format: celebrities play a series of brainteasers. Jeremy Vine hosts with team captains Sally Lindsay and Carol Vorderman. Today's guests are TV presenter Ore Oduba and choir star Gareth Malone, but there are plenty of comedians coming up over the week, including Stephen Bailey tomorrow, Miles Jupp on Wednesday, Dom Joly on Thursday and John Thomson on Friday. 5, 7pm
Tuesday June 24
TRANSACTION: Jordan Gray plays Liv, a transgender egomaniac (where does the comedian get her ideas?) who causes havoc on the supermarket nightshift. She's been hired by Pellocks boss Simon (Nick Frost) after he inadvertently offended the LGBTQ+ community with an ill-conceived marketing campaign and soon realises she's unsackable, allowing her to spread whatever chaos she wishes. The cast also includes Doon Mackichan, Thomas Gray, Kayla Meikle and Francesca Mills. Transaction began as a 2020 miniseries of six five-minute episodes on Comedy Central’s YouTube channel, but has been revamped for ITV. ITV2, 10.05pm
Wednesday June 25
LAURA SMYTH: YOUR MUM: In this new six-part series Laura Smyth talks to her guests about their relationships with their mothers. In episode one, Janine Harouni tells us what happened when she was swapped at birth, why her brother has a bunker in Arizona and how her mum rules the roost with her 'feminine guile'. And Russell Kane gives his hot male take on childbirth, makes a case against toddler food and thanks his mum for putting up with his extraordinary amount of energy. BBC Radio 4, 6.30pm
LIVE FROM MERTHYR TYDFIL: The second of two stand-up showcases recorded at Theatr Soar and hosted by Kiri Pritchard-McLean features Ignacio Lopez, Anna Thomas, Priya Hall and Owen Money. Both episodes are already on iPlayer. BBC One Wales, 10.40pm
Friday June 27
NOT GOING OUT: In tonight's episode, Lee has borrowed an old campervan to take Lucy away for the weekend - and she's not impressed. BBC One, 9pm.
