War in Israel makes series insensitive

ITV has pulled its new comedy about captured soldiers following the Hamas terrorist action in the Gaza Strip.

Australian show C*A*U*G*H*T was due to start on streaming service ITVX  from Thursday.

However, in a statement, the broadcaster said: ‘In light of current events, the launch date of C*A*U*G*H*T on ITVX will be delayed until further notice. We will be in touch when a new streaming date is confirmed.’

The comedy – which features Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon – was also due to be touted around broadcasters at the Mipcom international TV festival in Cannes next week.

Distributor Fremantle said: ‘In light of the current situation unfolding in Israel, we have taken the decision not to showcase ‘C*A*U*G*H*T’ at Mipcom this year.

‘At this time, our hearts and thoughts are with our colleagues and our partners in Israel, and all those affected.’

Originally made for Australian streaming service Stan, the six-episode series follows four Australian soldiers on a covert mission in a war-torn country who are captured and produce a hostage video that achieves unexpected viral success, turning them into unlikely celebrities.’

Director, producer and writer Kick Gurry stars alongside Matthew Fox, Ben O’Toole and Lincoln Younes – with Penn also one the executive producers.

On Saturday, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, seizing at least 150 hostages. A spokesperson for the military wing of Hamas said they will kill one civilian every time Israel launches an assault on Gaza.
