Jayde Adams' Strictly tribute to Victoria Wood

Dancing the Charleston to The Ballad of Barry and Freda

Jayde Adams paied tribute to Victoria Wood on Strictly Come Dancing tonight, dancing the Charleston to the late comic’s Ballad of Barry and Freda.

She and dance partner Karen Hauer even dressed as Wood, with Adams starting the routine at the piano singing the opening lines to the song, known for its ‘Let’s do it’ refrain.

However, the dance scored them only 28 out of a possible 40, leaving them ninth out of the 12 couples on the leaderboard.

That came despite judge Motsi Mabuse calling Adams ‘one of the best dancers we have' in terms of performance. But she added that Adams needed to concentrate more on her dancing.

Anton du Beke also said there were technical issues that needed work but added that it was ‘a brilliantly performed number… I really really enjoyed it’.

And Craig Revel Horwood elicited some boos when he told Adams she ‘could have done a lot more with it; it wasn’t very clean. For me it wasn’t great’.

This week’s programme was  celebrating 100 years of the BBC, with couples performing to either a familiar theme tune or a dance in tribute to an unforgettable programme.

Ellie Taylor and Johannes Radebe did the tango to the Casualty theme tune, but scored modestly, too, coming only one point, and one place above Adams and Hauer.

Mabuse summed up all the judges’ thoughts when she said: ‘What I see every single week is improvement… you guys are getting there.’

Revel Horwood agreed they were getting better, but still said the dance was ‘generic and lobotomised’ after a strong opening.

The show kicked off with the professionals dancing a tribute to the BBC, taking over several of the Corporation’s programmes.
