...but the night belongs to Dame Deborah James,

James Acaster and Jamali Maddix took home gongs at the British podcast awards last night.

Acaster’s Perfect Sounds wont the arts and culture category with Maddix’s Audible podcast Spooky Shit taking the comedy crown.

In the latter category, This is Gay by Kirk Flash took silver and Jon Holmes’s Cold Case Crime Cuts taking bronze. Flash also took home the rising star award.

British Scandal, in which Alice Levine and comic Matt Forde tell the stories of the murkier side of the British elite, from phone hacking to Profumo, won the  Spotlight award, for a show that has achieved mainstream success.

Looming large over the night was the late  Dame Deborah James, whose You Me And The Big C podcast with Lauren Mahon and the late Rachel Bland won the Podcast Champions award.

Accepting the award, Mahon said: ‘Me and Deb had a little joke when Rachel died that I couldn’t just do the podcast by myself because I couldn’t call it Me, Me And The Big C.

‘The podcast is our happy place. It’s a bit surreal to be standing here without both my girls. We knew this was a risk, that some of us would die when we started it, but we wanted to continue to champion it. There is more work to be done.

‘I don’t know what it looks like, but the podcast has always been a service. Last time we won at these awards, we dedicated the award to Rachel. I’m so proud to say that this is for Dame Deborah F*cking James!’
