Tom Davis sitcom returns for a one-off festive edition

Tom Davis sitcom Gary King is to return to BBC One for a Christmas special.

The half-hour episode involves the title character trying to ensure the annual Butterchurn Crescent Christmas Lights Display is bigger and brighter than ever, despite the reluctance of his neighbours who want to keep their electricity bills down.

Cast members Romesh Ranganathan, Laura Checkley, Simon Day,  Camille Coduri and Riley Burgin will all be returning.

In a statement,  Davis and his co-writer James DeFrond said: ‘We are honoured to have been asked to bring the Kings to BBC One this festive season, and after what has been a tough year hopefully we can bring a little joy and laughter with this special episode.’

A second series of  the sitcom has already been commissioned.

The first series launched in January with a modest 1.4million viewers and generally lukewarm reviews, but the BBC was reportedly encouraged  by a strong on-demand performance on iPlayer.
