Adam Kay up for prestigious book award

His memoir dubbed one of the biggest titles in the past 30 years

Adam Kay’s NHS memoirs This Is Going To Hurt has made a list of the top 11 books to have been released in the past 30 years.

The medic turned comedian’s diaries has made the final cut in the 30 From 30 initiative to mark the most successful and influential titles to have emerged from three decades of the British Book Awards.

Ten titles on the shortlist were picked from books which have won awards, affectionately known as Nibbies, in the past. But Kay’s title was chosen as a wildcard, having been overlooked by judges when it was released.

Including it now, organisers at The Bookseller said: ‘This is a groundbreaking book that launched the seemingly unstoppable "memoirs that matter" trend. Adam Kay narrowly missed out on a Nibbie - and it must have hurt. So, we have invited him back for another try…’

Other blockbuster titles on the list include Bridget Jones's Diary, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Wolf Hall and Wild Swans.

The winner is decided by public vote here.
