Comedians up for Royal Television Society awards

Comedy dominates the breakthrough categoty

Aisling Bea, Tim Renkow and Motherland star Tanya Moodie are up for the breakthrough accolade in this year’s Royal Television Society awards.

Although already well-known to viewers from numerous stand-up and panel show appearances, Bea is nominated for her acclaimed Channel 4 comedy This Way Up, while Renkow made the list for his groundbreaking BBC Three sitcom, Jerk.

Stage star Moodie, who previously played the role of John Watson's therapist Ella Thompson in Sherlock, is shortlisted for playing the apparently 'alpha mum’ Meg in the second series of BBC Two’s Motherland.

Meanwhile the best scripted comedy category will be contested by Derry Girls, Stath Lets Flats and Fleabag.

The latter’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge is up for best female comedy performance, alongside Diane Morgan for Motherland and Saiorse-Monica Jackson for Derry Girls.

And in the male category,  The Young Offenders stars Alex Murphy and Chris Walley are jointly nominated alongside Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa and Youssef Kerkour, for playing Syrian refugee Sami in Rufus Jones’s Channel 4 comedy Home.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is also up for the comedy writing accolade for Fleabag, where she is up against Danny Brocklehurst for Brassic and Laurie Nunn for Sex Education.

And comics London Hughes and Mo Gilligan are up for best entertainment performance for ITV2’s Don't Hate The Playaz and Channel 4’s The Lateish Show respectively – alongside  Stephen Mulhern for ITV’s In For A Penny.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by Paul Merton and held on Tuesday March 17 at The Grosvenor Hotel in central London
