Fans catch a glimpse of Peter Kay

...but only via video message

Peter Kay made a rare appearance at a charity screening of Phoenix Nights last night - but only on video.

The comic, who has lain low since cancelling his tour two years ago for family reasons, appeared on the big screen at the Eventim Apollo in London to explain why he had arranged the event, The Sun reports.

Fans had gathered to watch the sitcom to mark its 19th anniversary, but Kay admitted: ‘It should have been the 20th anniversary but I got the dates wrong! I arranged the venue, booked it, and then realised — I don’t think it’s 20 years.’

The screening raised money for Cancer Research UK – with others taking place at the Manchester Apollo next month.

Caro Evans from the charity  said: ‘We are so grateful to Peter. The money that is raised from the events will fund vital research to beat cancer.'

Over Christmas, Kay was pictured backstage at Nativity! The Musical in London.
