Is The Simpsons coming to an end?

Not according to its showrunner

The Simpsons is NOT coming to an end, its long-serving showrunner has insisted.

Al Jean spoke out to deny claims made by composer Danny Elfman, who wrote the theme tune, that the animated comedy would end after its next season, the 32nd.

Responding to those reports, he tweeted: ‘We are all thankful the following article is NOT TRUE.’

And in further comments to Metro, Jean – who has been with the show for 31 years – added: 'No disrespect to Mr. Elfman, but we are producing season 32 starting next year and have no plans to end after that.'

Speculation was sparked by an interview Elfman gave to  Irish entertainment website  Joe, in which he said: ‘From what I’ve heard, it is coming to an end. I don’t know for a fact, but I’ve heard that it will be in its last year.’

The 31st season has just aired in America and a 32nd has already been ordered, which would take the animated comedy to 713 episodes.

Elfman added that he was ‘flabbergasted and amazed’ that the show, which started in 1989, has lasted as long as it did’.

‘When I scored The Simpsons, I wrote this crazy piece of music, and I expected no one would hear it, because I really did not think the show had a chance in hell.’

The show has been credited with foreseeing many future news events – the latest being the map of predicted results for the forthcoming UK general election:
