Comic insulted war vet on last week's show

Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson has apologised a war veteran he insulted on last week's show.

And Lieutenant Commander Dan Crenshaw – a Republican Congressman-elect from Texas – appeared on the show to accept the mea culpa.

What's more he then turned the tables on Davidson to mock his appearance, and the failure of his relationship with Ariane Grande.

Davidson was the subject of a fierce backlash last weekend after saying Crenshaw, who wears an eye patch after losing his eye in combat 'looks like a hitman in a porno movie'.

And he added flippantly: 'I know he lost his eye in war of whatever.'

On last night's show he sought to build bridges.

He said: 'In what I’m sure was a huge shock for people who know me, I made a poor choice last week. And on behalf of the show and myself, I apologise'.

'I mean this from the bottom of my heart. It was a poor choice of words. The man is a war hero and he deserves all of the respect in the world. And if any good came of this, maybe it was that for one day the left and the right finally came together to agree on something: that I’m a dick.'

And after Crenshaw had finished roasting Davidson, he struck a note of sincerity when he said: 'Not just that the left and the right can still agree on some things, but also this: Americans can forgive one another.'

He also urged Americans to say 'never forget' to a veteran for Remembrance weekend.

Previously the former Navy SEAL told Fox News that although the joke was offensive, he chose not to be offended, saying: 'I don't have to be angry about it... Let's not always be mad about what the other side is doing.'

He had also called on SNL producers to donate $1million to veterans' charities.

Here's the apology.
