Benidorm named best comedy – two months after being axed

Success at TV Choice Awards

Benidorm was named best comedy at the TV Choice awards last night – two months after ITV cancelled it.

It was a fact show creator Derren Litten was quick to point out when he picked up the gong - shortly after tweeting: ‘Pissed already. Hope we don’t win because I don’t know my own name right now.’

He told the audience at: This is awkward. We've just been cancelled. The show has just been cancelled.

And Litten likened the award to being sacked for your job and then being recognised as employee of the month.

TV Choice awards are voted for by viewers, and Benidorm triumphed over fellow nominees The Big Bang Theory, The Keith & Paddy Picture Show and Not Going Out BBC

Despite being cancelled by ITV, the sitcom has has been turned into a live show featuring many of the original cast, which kicked off a UK tour at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle on Friday.

In other categories, there was a double victory for Ant & Dec as Saturday Night Takeaway was named best entertainment show and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! was named best reality show.

Strictly Come Dancing won best talent show while Sunday Brunch, which often features guest comedians, was named best food show
