Waiting For God revived as a stage show
With Roy Hudd and Nichola McAuliffe
Nineties sitcom Waiting For God is being revived as a stage play.
Roy Hudd and Nichola McAuliffe will take on the roles of Tom Ballard and Diana Trent originally played by Graham Crowden and Stephanie Cole.
And the show’s creator, Michael Aitkens, has written a new script for this production, which goes on a UK tour from next month
The original, set in the Bayview Retirement Home in Bournemouth. ran for 47 episodes over five series on BBC One from 1990, and developed around elderly residents determined not to remain quiet and docile in their old age.
Producers Seabright Productions say: ‘All the favourite characters from the original series are reimagined for 2017, facing the challenges that come with growing old disgracefully in the era of the silver surfer.
‘At Bayview Retirement Home, battle-axe extraordinaire Diana Trent conspires with new resident Tom Ballard to give the conniving manager his comeuppance through a hilarious conspiracy with unexpectedly heart-warming results.’
The show is directed by David Grindley, who won a Tony Award in New York in 2007 for his revival of Journey’s End.
Waiting For God is just the latest in a string of British sitcoms revived for the stage, including Allo Allo, Yes Prime Minister and Birds Of A Feather – the latter two prompting a return of the shows to TV.
